Adirondack 46ers, December 21-24, 2016
Eric and Matthew Gilbertson
I flew to Albany, NY on December 21, rendezvoused with Matthew, and we drove to the High Peaks area of the Adirondacks. With only a few hours of light left in the day and 35F pouring rain we hiked up Nye and Street peaks, which were reasonably close to the trailhead. Amazingly there was no snow at all on the mountains, just a bit of ice near the top, and we got back to the trailhead by dark.
The next morning we hiked up Wright Peak, and were met with 60mph winds. We continued to Algonquin and Iroquois, finally encountering a few small patches of snow before returning back to the trailhead. With no snow to slow us down we were hiking at normal summer speed, and had enough time to run up Big Slide mountain before sunset. That night we slept in the Subaru at the Giant trailhead, and on day 3 of our trip hiked up Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge to round out the 46ers adventure before returning back to Boston for Christmas Eve.
