Cathedral Butte Northwest (7,160ft) – Highpoint of Canyonlands National Park
Eric and Katie – March 24, 2015
Katie and I had driven down to Utah for spring break to climb at Indian Creek, and after a few days of climbing we needed a rest day. It turned out the highpoint of Canyonlands National Park was actually just a short drive from the crags we’d been at.
We were sharing a campground with some climbing friends nearby so drove southwest up the north cottonwood creek until we could turn off right near the 5751 survey point on the quad. From there we followed a descent dirt road to the north side of Cathedral Butte. We then turned right onto the small peninsula of land jutting into Canyonlands National Park.
We parked the Forester near the highpoint, then got out and walked around the rim. There were a few cairns in various places, and we walked along the rim until we were satisfied we’d stepped on the highest ground. It’s hard to tell because the rim of the peninsula appears to be a constant elevation.
After eating a snack we headed back to get in some more amazing crack climbing at Indian Creek.
