Grandview – New River Gorge Highpoint

On the highpoint

The newest national park was recently designated in West Virgina at New River Gorge, and we decided to go check it out and tag the highest point. Many thanks to Dave Covill for researching exactly where the highpoint is.

We left home in Berea, KY saturday morning and drove about 4 hours east into West Virginia to the park. We first visited the top contender for the highpoint, a point 2,517ft on the southern border. We drove to a nearby cemetary, parked, then walked back up the road to the highpoint. The coordinates are just in the field to the north and it was no problem stepping over the broken fence and walking around the briar bushes to the highpoint.

We then drove to the visitors parking lot at the Grandview area and tagged the second contender, a 2,516ft hill with a sign proclaiming it the highpoint of the park. After that we hiked over to the view of the gorge, then hiked a fun trail to Turkey Spur Rock and back, before driving home to Berea.
