Grossman Hammock

Grossman Hammock (10ft) – Highpoint of Everglades National Park

Eric and Jake – June 14, 2015

I was on a trip with Matthew, our Dad, and Jake to climb the highpoint of Cuba and we flew back to Ft Lauderdale afterwards for our onward journey to the US. Jake and I had some extra time so gave ourselves a few extra days in Florida before flying home.

We rented a car at the airport and drove down to Everglades National Park. The Everglades is not known for mountains, but it still has a highest point of land and we were determined to hit that first. We drove to near Florida City, then drove west on Richmond Drive into the park, to a place labeled “Chikika” on the park map. It looked like an abandoned park building at the end of the road, and the building was all boarded up.

We parked and walked around the woods near the building until we were certain we’d hit the highest ground. That area is called Grossman Hammock and is about 10ft tall. Satisfied we’d hit the highpoint, we continued driving through the park to Flamingo, where we hiked around a bit and camped for the night.

The next morning we drove out to Key West, then flew back home to Seattle and Boston.
